If you have hair, then you know what split ends are. You know how annoying and unsightly they are and you know how difficult it can be to get rid of them once and for all. You can get split ends from age, dryness, poor diet, towel drying, excessive combing, or heat styling. While the only permanent solution to fighting those pesky split ends is to cut them off, you can take some steps to help them from coming back. It is important to treat them so they don't spread up the entire length of the strand of hair. I will give you some tips and tricks and tell you how to get rid of split ends.

What causes split ends?

There are many causes for split ends, but here are a few common reasons that people get split ends.

Heat Styling - Using hair accessories like a hair dryer, curling iron, or flat iron can cause split ends. The common mistake people make is they don't protect their hair first with some kind of product before they use a heating accessory. Hair dryers actually drys up you hair's natural moisturizers which can leave you hair unhealthy and very dry. Before you use heated accessories on you hair you should first treat your hair with a moisturizing product that will protect you hair from becoming too dry.

Poor Diet - Everyone knows that a poor diet can affect your health in more ways than one and your hair is no exception! Simply put, a unhealthy died will give you unhealthy hair. By having an unhealthy died, your hair will lack the necessary nutrients to provide the natural moisture it needs. Without those nutrients your hair will dry out and you will be more likely to get split ends.

Towel Drying - Most people with long hair will often dry their hair after a shower or bath by drying it with a towel. This way of drying your hair is actually not a good idea as it can be unhealthy for your hair. By rubbing your hair with a towel vigorously it causes a lot of friction and it will cause split ends. Squeezing the water out of your hair and absorbing it with the towel is the best way to dry your hair after a shower or bath.




How to Fix Split Ends

There are many things you can do at home to help fix split ends. There are also products that can help you get rid of split ends. Here's a few tips to tell you how to fix split ends

Leave in Conditioner - Using a leave in conditioner is a good idea to combat split ends. They can help keep your hair moisturized throughout the day, especially if you plan on using a hair dryer, curling iron, or a flat iron.

Blow Dry Properly - Using a nozzle on your hair dryer will help direct the hot air. This will help you blow dry more effectively and it will have less time with the intense heat on your hair. It is always best to dry most of your hair first then use the blow dryer to finish off the drying process. 

Avoid Hair Treatments - Hair dyes, perms, highlights, and flat iron straightening all cause split ends. Not only are the chemicals used it those treatments bad for your hair, but they are also expensive so you will notice the savings if you avoid those things for a while.

Cut The Ends - This is the only guaranteed way to get rid of existing split ends you might have. The longer you wait to trim the ends of your hair, the bigger chance you have of the split end traveling up the strands of your hair. Trimming your hair is actually more healthy for it than just letting it grow and grow. Trimming the ends promote healthy growth and will get rid of and prevent split ends.

Take Biotin and Folic Acid - These two nutrients are types of vitamin B which is great for promoting healthy hair. Studies have shown that they will help gain longer hair length and thickness. Folic Acid helps your body with the production of red blood cells, which will help your hair grow faster and stronger. You can find good amounts of Folic Acid in foods such as wheat, oranges, soybeans, and leafy vegetables. Biotin will actually help promote health finger nails and hair, so it's a two for one deal! You can find high Biotin levels in foods such as walnuts, soybeans, peas, and brown rice.
